Data from mobile Order & Pay solution Wi5, shows huge support for hospitality during the first full week of outdoor reopening.
Thousands of consumers flocked to pubs and restaurants on outdoor reopening day (12 April), with sales via mobile more than doubling compared to pre-lockdown. Compared to the last full trading week before lockdown, total sales across Wi5 were up 34%, and like-for-like sales (amongst those operators trading on both weeks*) increased 57%.

“In February, we released research reporting nearly a third of consumers would return to restaurants as soon as they open — almost double the number from when restrictions were lifted in July 2020 — and this was undoubtedly the case.
On the first day of reopening, we saw an enormous 1,106% increase in transactions across our platform compared to last July’s reopening! A sign of both the hospitality operators we work with entrusting the majority of sales to our platform and crucially, consumers accepting and expecting digital ordering as the norm.
While there was a rush to return to pubs and restaurants last Monday as we predicted, support for the hospitality industry continued throughout the week. On average, our operators saw a 57% increase in like-for-like sales (last week vs. pre-lockdown) as customers celebrated being able to go out and enjoy our fantastic hospitality industry again.
Finally, there’s a reason to feel optimistic. Our platform data is hugely encouraging and predicts these figures will grow as consumer confidence increases and restrictions continue to ease. Venues yet to reopen can rest assured that consumer demand is there to support them, and the industry as a whole should be gearing up for a record-breakingly busy summer.”
*Comparing 29 October – 04 November 2020 (the last full week of trading pre-lockdown) to 12 April – 18 April 2021 (first week of outdoor reopening).
